Honeywell 50250-N Permanent True HEPA Round Air Purifier with Germ Reduction

As a lifelong allergy and asthma sufferer, I’d never been able to have a pet, or stay very long in places where dogs or cats reside.  I’d always felt a little deprived because of this and swore that one day I’d find a dog of my own, that would hopefully not trigger my allergies (I was willing to tolerate a mild reaction for the sake of having a pet).

But we took our precautions before bringing her home – first, we bought an ‘allergy-friendly’ breed (no dog is truly hypo-allergenic), we removed the rugs in the area where the puppy would love, we have a vacuum with a HEPA filter, and we weren’t going to allow her in the bedrooms or on the furniture.  But I still wasn’t sure this would be enough.

We picked up a Honeywell 50250 HEPA Air Purifierthe week she came home – the first thing I noticed was how easy it was to put together.  It was just a matter of unscrewing a bolt, inserting the permanent filter, and wrapping the permanent filter with the pre-filter (which attached with velcro… so simple).  Within minutes, it was running, and within an hour, I noticed the air smelled cleaner, which I wasn’t expecting (for some reason, I didn’t realize the air would smell better – I just thought it would suck up the allergens).

I clean the house regularly, and I’m still amazed how much ‘stuff’ is caught by the filter.

It has 3 speed settings, and I generally keep it on low (I’ll crank it up if I feel I need it).  The fan is quite strong, consequently, it’s quite noisy.  But it seems to be doing the trick.  I’ve had it for 4 months now and have cleaned the pre-filter twice – which is simple to do , and there’s a light that turns on to tell you when it’s time to clean.

The trouble is… it only covers about 375 square feet, which covers the area my puppy’s currently confined to, but I’ll have to either buy another when she has full access to the main floor, or invest in a ‘whole-home’ filtration system.  It’s also not the nicest-looking thing – very institutional – and right now it’s sitting in my living room, so, not a great focal point.

For now, though – this is working like a charm.  I’m getting to enjoy life at home with a puppy, without constantly reaching for my asthma inhaler.

To reduce the “focal point” it might help to have a tower air purifier. I don’t know about functionality but was just at a friend’s home and she has 3 dogs and a Hamilton Beach True Air Tower. If it was running at the time, I couldn’t hear it, and it took me a long time to notice it, at which point I though it was a speaker. She told me it was a air purifier and said she likes it. I don’t have much information about it, but as a guest in her home, my husband’s allergies were not affected at all by the 3 dogs, and I wouldn’t have even noticed the filter if I hand’t gone to pick up a dog toy next to it while playing with the dogs.

My neighbour has one for the last 20 yrs. Would never do without one. He has 2 dogs and he never complains about them until he comes to my house where I have my dog and 2 cats. He keeps telling me to switch.
